Easter in Prague: Traditions, Markets, and a Splash of “Fun” 🙂
Mar 24, 2025
Spring in Prague brings not only blooming gardens and warmer days but also the vibrant celebration of Easter. The city comes alive with colorful decorations, traditional markets, and a few unique customs that might surprise visitors.
Easter Markets
Prague's main squares — the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square — host charming Easter markets filled with hand-painted eggs, wooden crafts, and delicious local treats. You can sample traditional foods like "mazanec" (a sweet Easter bread), "jidáše" (honey twists), and of course, grilled sausages and trdelník (although the latter is more of a tourist favorite than an old Czech tradition). Stalls are often decorated with bright ribbons and blossoming branches, adding to the festive feel.
The Quirky Easter Monday Tradition
While Easter Sunday is about religious celebrations and family gatherings, Easter Monday is when things take a playful turn. Although the fun is had mostly by boys… According to Czech tradition, boys and men visit the homes of female friends and family, carrying a "pomlázka" — a braided willow whip decorated with ribbons. Gently whipping the girls' legs is meant to bring health, youth, and fertility for the coming year. In return, the boys receive painted eggs, chocolates, or even a shot of homemade schnapps. Odd, isn’t it?!
